Fad Diets...What You Should Know

Everyone wants that quick fix…”I want to be the weight I was in high school and I want it yesterday!” Plenty of companies along with the marketing and media giants play on this emotion of the average American and continue to release the “next best diet” that supposedly gets everyone to lose weight in no time flat. If this were true, we would not have 2/3 of the nation overweight or obese!

The emotional side of you may be tempted, but let the logical side of you kick in. Here are some things to look for to identify a fad diet:

  • It promotes quick weight loss (more than 2 lbs. per week)

  • Sounds too good to be true (most of them do)

  • Lacks evidence

  • Is food specific (i.e. Grapefruit Diet)

  • Is all/mostly liquid foods

  • Discourages Exercise

  • Says “No exercise needed”

  • Discourages water intake

  • Promotes more than 2 lbs. of weight loss per week

  • This is very important…the body cannot handle rapid weight loss without putting strain on other organs. Slow and steady wins the race.

  • Uses testimonials instead of clinical studies (they are usually paid to say good things)

  • Must be expensive/costly

  • Only has pre-packaged foods

  • Adds a foot note stating, “results are not typical”

  • Just because it was on Dr. Oz doesn't mean it’s beneficial for you.

  • Uses Metabolism Boosting Pills (exercise is the way to boost your metabolism)

  • Uses Weight Loss Teas

  • Diet patches, jewelry or other devices are worn

  • Body Wraps or slim suits

The best “diet” is a lifestyle program/plan of whole foods that are full of nutrients and contain carbohydrates, fats and protein, all of which are essential for proper body functions.
